ADDICTIVE TV

ADDICTIVE TV present their internet remix for Slumdog Millionare at GoSee

Described so eloquently as 'next level shit' by Grandmaster Flash, when they supported the great man in San Francisco, Addictive TV are certainly that. If you’ve never come across their unique brand of entertainment, they use techniques similar to audio sampling in the music world, remixing linked pictures and sound samples from film and back catalogue content to create dynamic new work for their live shows and as commissioned work for advertisers and movie studios.

Meticulously sampling everything from movies to concert footage, music videos to sports events, the intensely detailed style of Addictive TV has been praised by creative innovators like Jeff Mills, Stereo MC's and the former Kraftwerk frontman Karl Bartos. Even Moby described them as 'a tough act to follow' when they supported him at the opening event of SXSW 2008 in Austin, Texas.

Using DVD turntables and laptops, the duo’s live sets are a state of the art audiovisual phenomenon which have blown away audiences in over 40 countries as they criss-cross the art and club worlds. In demand in Hollywood for their remixing skills, in the last year Addictive TV have remixed Iron Man for Paramount, Max Payne for 20th Century Fox and most recently the multi award-winning Slumdog Millionaire as viral trailers. Currently they’re in studio remixing a new action film for Universal.

We asked Addictive TV’s Graham Daniels and Tolly to tell us a little bit about the Slumdog remix, how it came about, and what it is exactly that they do.

Graham: “It all came about after The Times, a UK national newspaper, did a big feature about us, and as a result of that we got to do the Ealing Studios comedy Easy Virtue for distributors Pathe and they straight away wanted us to remix Slumdog Millionaire. They showed Danny Boyle our work, he particularly liked our Take the Lead remix, and gave the go ahead.”

Tolly: “It’s a real compliment that directors and producers want us to remix their movies. Slumdog was a fantastic film to work with, really vibrant, colourful, and full of energy. It’s one of those films that you would think would be really easy to remix but it was actually quite tricky to get right, to match the film’s style and pace. We had access to the entire film, so we could choose whichever bits we wanted to sample. After the sampling process was finished, we went straight onto building the track, with the video work being done at the same time as the audio.”

Graham: “Yes, what we do is a kind of cross between music producing and film-editing but all at the same time! And after many years of experimenting and developing techniques, we’ve found what works best for us, which is basically sitting there side by side swapping files and ideas late into the night for what seems like weeks on end.”

Tolly: “It took a few goes, but we were pleased with the results in the end and it seems to be a popular number when we play live now….We just try and make what pleases us creatively and hope everyone enjoys it too.”
