Killing all the flies. Ludwigsburg film students shoot sci-fi-mystery-thriller US series in Germany. Crowdfunding support appeal on GoSee!
What would happen, if one could call the deceased back from the realm of the dead? How much is the life of a human being worth? And what would you be willing to pay to escape the clutches of the grim reaper?
Three young filmmakers tackled exactly those questions, Hanna Maria Heidrich, Alena Jelinek and Judith Schöll – short: Howling A's Production – in their Sci-Fi-mystery-thriller series KILLING ALL THE FLIES.
“From the very outset of coming up with and developing our ideas, our motto was to create a series that we would be eager to watch ourselves!” explains Hanna Maria Heidrich. The successful newcomer director managed to clock up one million hits within two months with her nature campaign WE MISS YOU (www.wemissyou.de), which was awarded three Gold Awards during the Young Director Award in Cannes (as reported by GoSee).
The upcoming series is about aspiring policeman Levin, who is wrongly accused of murdering his girlfriend Marie. In search of the real killer, he uncovers a conspiracy that turns out to be deeper than he would have ever imagined: An influential organisation managed to escape death itself by means of an intricate swap-system, for the price of many innocent lives . . .
They are selling their knowledge as an exclusive and literal 'life insurance' to all clients who are capable of coming up with the necessary money. When Levin discovers that his girlfriend is also a victim of the organisation, he sets off to fight the overpowering enemy. Yet, over the course of the series, Levin has to admit that the answer to the question: “Who actually deserves to die in the first place?” is not an easy one to answer.
The series pilot for KILLING ALL THE FLIES is produced as a non-profit cooperation between the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, ProSiebenSat1 and UFA. The shoot will start in Stuttgart and the surrounding area early next year (the production will be in English).
The producers of the series Alena Jelinek and Judith Schöll explain, “We decided to produce the series in English, because we need to make sure that we maximize all possible channels of marketing – that includes the international world of television!” For the production, Stuttgart is turned into an American metropolis and English-speaking actors will be flown in from abroad to ensure the utmost authenticity and quality.
Quite the elaborate undertaking: “It begins with typically American doorknobs and includes everything to American cars, which will be featured in the film”, says the director Hanna Maria Heidrich. The transformation of Stuttgart is very costly indeed. “The details have to be spot on to make sure that our concept can be realised without sacrificing the necessary authenticity of the project.”
Exciting: even when it comes to financing the film, Howling A's came up with a creative solution: they are trying to convince interested parties and supporters to donate money on their project homepage www.killingalltheflies.com – 'Crowdfunding'!
In return, each supporter not only becomes a part of the film, but will also get something back for each donation. In the first few weeks, they already found two official sponsors that will benefit from a placement in the film's credits. More information on how to become a supporter yourself can be found on www.killingalltheflies.com.
