Mary Henrietta Kingsley (* 13 October 1862 in Islington; died 3 June 1900 in Simon’s Town, South Africa) was an explorer and ethnologist. The daughter of a British travel writer, she moved to the Dark Continent following the early death of her parents.
She had a large influence on the European perception of Africa and Africans. Mary followed in her father’s footsteps and became a travel writer. She was the first European to visit remote parts of West and Central Africa, for example in Gabun.
Mary died of Typhus, aged 37, in a prisoner of war camp in Simon’s Town by Cape Town, where she worked as a nurse for detained Boers. Her last wish was fulfilled and she was buried at sea.
Film locations of the three-part series included Cape Town, Titsikama, Storms River, Keurbooms, Plettenberg (South Africa) and of course, London.
ColorFIELD proprietors Petra Höfer and Freddie Röckenhaus were commissioned by ZDF with the production. In 2007, Petra Höfer was awarded the German Television Prize for her ‘Blut und Spiele - Die Dopingfalle’ (blood and games – the doping trap) two part documentary. She had also previously received countless nominations for the Adolf-Grimme Prize and the Deutschen Fernsehpreis (German TV award).
Friederike Haedecke was the ZDF editor in charge of the project.
