Japan - Season by Season, by Sandrine Bailly
For most, Japan is simply insane. Exotic, loud, dazzling. Kimonos spring to mind and the confusing moments in the film Lost In Translation. One might also think of Samurai and ancient traditions. Japanologist Sandrine Bailly on the other hand associates harmony and aesthetics with the country. In her series ‘Japan – Season by Season’ she takes us on a visual journey to an extraordinary world.
Isolated from the rest of the world for a considerable amount of time, Japan offers an unique richness of art, literature and philosophy, sources of elaborate inspiration up to this day. Paintings and prints from the Edo era, ink drawings, woodcuts and coloured photographs, as well as quotes of the most renowned poets, authors and Zen masters, the author manages to create a diverse anthology.
She does not attempt to create a visual analysis or tackle a general overview of the country. Using matt and colourful images, Sandrine Bailly serves up insights into the soul of Japan and the timeless elegance of Japanese art of four seasons.
A far Eastern saying goes as follows: Enjoy life, for time has passed beyond the point you thought it had. “Japan – Season by Season” offers a small foray into a world of thought for which it is never too late.
