Slanted #13 - Grotesque 1 : on grotesque typography, their origins and the multitude of variety out there today - on GoSee
Slanted #13 – Grotesque 1 (To Create A More Graceful, Human Appearance) deals with contemporary and historic humanist grotesque fonts.
They originate to the typeface for the signage system of the London Underground in early 20th century England, and to Gill Sans, which followed London Underground. Depending on the cultural sphere or classification, the typeface is also called humanist sans, lineal humanist, semi-grotesque, younger grotesque, lineal sans-serif typefaces with dynamic form principle.
We are delighted to present numerous fonts, illustrations and projects. Some great photo reports about this are ‘Heterotopien’ by Karsten Kronas (Bielefeld), ‘A Marriage with God’ by Anusha S. Yadav (London) and ‘Power To The People’ by Christian Minke (Hüttenberg), who just returned from the revolution struck regions in Egypt.
Type Essays by Flo Gaertner (Karlsruhe), Alexander Negrelli (Berlin) as well as Dan Reynolds (Berlin) deal with Humanist Sans.
It also features interviews with Erik Kessels (Amsterdam), Jonathan Barnbrook (London), Don Karl aka Stone (Berlin) and Pascal Zoghbi (Beirut), Christian Minke (Hüttenberg), Eiko Nagase (Tokyo), Yosuke Yamaguchi (Tokyo) as well as the third part of the Tokyo Reports by Ian Lynam (Tokyo) and another musical journey by Frank Wiedemann (Berlin).
FYI: Slanted 13 and 14 are a double number on the elaborate field of grotesque typography. Issue 14 will be released in June and will feature new font designs in the tradition of the American, neo- and geometric grotesque.
The new Slanted magazine is available from select stores and the Slanted Shop.
