Marc Trautmann : Secret areas - remnants of early outer space projects

Photographer Marc TRAUTMANN presents his new work “Secret areas“. The sequel to his “Off the radar“ piece, which he realised at Mojave Airport, between LA and Las Vegas, took him to the desert in 2008.

His photographs present remnants of early space projects scattered across the Nevada desert. They could easily be mistaken for stills from Stanley Kubrik’s epic “2001: Space Odyssey” saga.

“Secret Areas” was the term for the restricted areas, which the US Air Force used to develop secret space programmes for military purposes.

At the end of the 1960s, in the age of “Theatre Weapons”, spaceships that were to be launched into outer space, were actually designed by the Lunex programme in keeping with the aesthetics of Hollywood’s Science Fiction films.
