Tout va bien : girl power with Mary McCartney, Lieselotte Strelow, Gisele Freund and the Tenbuß sisters
No, this publication is not a feminist manifesto or a battle cry against men. The TOUT VA BIEN editors believe in the peaceful cohabitation of both sexes – despite, and especially because of the (multiple) small differences.
The latest issue devotes the majority of its focus to women behind and in front of the camera. It deals with the feminine photography perspective and the charisma, energy, spirit and sexiness of female models, regardless of age, status or established beauty ideals.
The team concentrated on a group of female photographers, whose vita, work and processes couldn’t be more different. For example, Lieselotte Strelow and Gisèle Freund. Lieselotte Strelow hit the big time during the boom of the 50s and 60s, her portraits of stage stars, – from Gustav Gründgens and Therese Giehse – politicians, writers and artists captured the zeitgeist of the time.
Gisèle Freund, also born in Germany, emigrated to Paris in the 30s and then later South America. She is considered a pioneer of colour photography. Her intimate knowledge of the Parisian and South American art and literature scenes were manifested in her portrait shots of Jean-Paul Sartre, Samuel Beckett, Simone de Beauvoir, Stefan Zweig, Frieda Kahlo and many, many more.
Two detailed photo volumes illustrate and document the work by these two artists, often accompanied by autobiographic text.
TOUT VA BIEN have every right to be a bit proud of their opening series with Mary McCartney. The daughter of Linda Eastman and Ex-Beatle Paul, and sister of fashion star Stella, presents fascinating exposures of Tilda Swinton, Helen Mirren and Vanessa Redgrave amongst others. In an exclusive TOUT VA BIEN interview she also speaks of her family, childhood and creative roots.
Two sisters, a camera and an amazing 60 year hunt for the best shots of celebs. 100,000 photos later, the twins Christel und Margret Tenbuß share their treasures with TOUT VA BIEN. And all this without a VIP backstage pass or important daddy in tow, now that’s what we call a sister act!
This issue also includes: brand new fashion shots and Helmut Newton’s highlights from the 60s and 70s; women’s bodies up close and personal, and as always, the most interesting exhibitions in Paris, London and New York, as well as a selection of their latest picture and photo volumes.
