PAM Mirjam Böhm : NEWcomer Mark Holthusen, photography, picture retouching, model making
San Francisco-based photographer Mark HOLTHUSEN is new at PAM. His work is an unusual combination of photography, innovative model making and picture retouching. In an elegant, almost painterly setting, his pictures continuously unite digital ingenuity, a unique talent and a great imagination. Mark’s signature style quickly established his career: commissioners such as Honda, Napster, Microsoft, Kohler Quest, Target and HBO are amongst his many clients.
His award winning work has been celebrated by Communication Arts, Graphis, American Photography and PDN. In 2007 he won the IPA Photographer of the Year Award for Advertising and Music. In 2008 he was nominated for the Lucie Photography Award’s International Photographer 2008/2009. At the same time Mark Holthusen was counted as amongst the 200 Best of AD Photographers by Walter Lürzer, and published in a book with the same title. An impressive list for someone who has only been freelancing in the business for four years.
Mark spent some of his childhood in Nevada, the “Western State“, which inspired him to shoot challenging and dramatic projects. Mark unveiled his visions at the premiere of Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters’ Ça Ira opera. Roger Waters and Sony BMG Music wanted Mark’s images to replace the traditional theatre set at the opera’s premiere in Rome. 120 of Mark’s photos served as the sole visual description accompanying the opera, projected onto a 30m wide screen.
In 2007 Mark was selected by GSD&M/Idea City and Kohler, to design the seventh annual “As I See It“ campaign. As I See It“ is one of the most renowned advertising competitions in North America and began its tradition by uniting renowned photographers, with risky and unconventional fine art and commerce.
The attached TOYOTA Prius motif (Print AZ, worldwide) was commissioned by Saatchi & Saatchi-Los Angeles. Mark travelled to New Zealand with his production team for the landscape shots. He also realised the Toyota Prius TV spot whilst over there. Mark HOLTHUSEN generated the “Boot“ motif for MERGE RECORDS, it was then used as the cover for the American Music Club. The shots were realised at a pool in a Los Angeles backyard. The portrait of musician David Eugene Edwards reflects his spirit of music “Which is a bit folk gothic, melancholy and little Old West“. The “poolside vision“ was realised for the Halekulani Hotel in Honolulu, and Ground Zero, Los Angeles.
GoSee presents their first “enchanting” selection of Mark’s work.
