GoSee presents the interview she gave to The Makeup Show Europe.

The Makeup Show Europe : How did you get started in the beauty industry?
Loni Baur : In 1992 I completed my formal education, but was always very interested in the arts, especially painting and pantomime art. I loved to build masks for my own pantomime shows. At that time, I didn’t really take it too seriously; I didn’t consider how I could make a career out of it. In 1994 I followed my passion and attended a course at a renowned makeup school. To my surprise, I witnessed all of my talents come together, without force, through the art of makeup. It took many years of hard work until I became confident and was able to express myself with Makeup in the way that I wanted to. It takes some time in the industry to establish oneself. However, today, I get booked for my creativity and ability to combine the commercialaspect of makeup with the exciting art of applying colours and textures.

Is there anyone who inspired you? What inspires you?
For the last 9 years I have been a part of a prestigious team involved in creating looks for Paris Fashion Week. This has always been a source of great inspiration for me. You are so close to so many fantastic artists; It almost feels like you could inhale the new trends and techniques just by proximity.
I was a player in Diane Kendal’s Show team. She has always been an idol of mine. I admire her creativity andextraordinary personality. I have always been impressed by how simply and easily she would execute the most complicated looks.
In my spare time I love to visit galleries from contemporary artists like Tracy Emin to influential artists previous eras. I love to get lost for hours, taking in the inspiration. Sometimes you don’t realize the significance of an art piece until perhaps months later, when the perfect project arrives to use the piece as inspiration in makeup.

How would you describe your style?
My work can be soft and very fragile, while on the other hand I love to be loud and colourful. For me, the most important aspect of my work is that whatever I do must be tasteful and executed to perfection. The most exciting part of the process to me is exploring new ways of interpreting makeup.
Of course my work is very much dependent on the photography. I love to work with photographers who appreciate the art of makeup as much as I do. Sometimes makeup can be so subtle, that it’s a true gift when a photographer brings out those small intricate details: that tiny bit of shine or the blush that gives the girl that perfect glow. When I get more artificial in my style, I love to be experimental. I want to achieve something that maybe hasn’t been seen before.

What are the must have products in your kit?
My Shu Uemura Lash curler and a shiny stick. There are some other secret ingredients that I won’t divulge

What prompted you to found the Color and Creme Academy? What is the mission of that school?
I know how difficult it can be to get started in the Industry, that’s why I decided to start the Color and Creme Academy. There are so many talented artists that are alone, while they try to build up their careers. Color and Creme is an Academy for experienced Make up Artists who are already working or at least mastered the basic knowledge of makeup application. I wanted to give young students the opportunity to be trained to the highest level and to launch their careers in the industry.
I strive to maximize their learning potential and achievements. Every student receives one on one instruction. In my school, the students really get to see what it takes to work for top fashion magazine such as Vogue and Numero and truly experience thateveryday life of a working makeup artist is like. They are trained to buildconfidence with colours and textures and to build on their own creativity. They learn how to make the right decisions while their looks. I believe that motivation is one of the greatest tools in education. I love to I see the progress a students makes in just a one class.

What is your Vision for the future of the Academy?
My vision is to build the Academy to be an institution for trends, techniques, art and an authentic exchange amongst the most talented makeup artists in the industry. I would love to connect superstars with new talents from the market and give new makeup artists the opportunity to learn face to face from their idols… My greatest aim is to bring the latest trends from the catwalks instantly to my students.
As an educator, what is the most important advice you hope that your students walk away with. Whatever you do, do it yourself and develop your own ideas. Do not copy; Just be open and inspired. You can find inspiration anywhere, just open your eyes. If you do makeup, make it a statement. But be mindful of incorporating too many ideas which may kill the beauty. Always let the natural beauty shine through in the looks that you create. And most importantly, Have fun and believe in yourself!
