Amazing Africa by reportage photographer Pascal Maitre - sand seas, Touaregs and the search for ghosts in the heart of wilderness, an illustrated book published by Edition Lammerhuber and exhibition in Vienna

Edition Lammerhuber recently published the book AMAZING AFRICA, featuring photographic highlights by French GEO and National Geographic photographer Pascal Maitre of the fascinating continent that is Africa. The Museum of Natural History Vienna presents photographs from the book at the exhibition AMAZING AFRICA – tradition, environment, conflicts, which will be running from 3 October until 11 November 2012.

Pascal Maitre has captured our planet’s most exciting continent for 30 years. His passion has driven him to travel and shoot in more than 40 countries in Africa so far. He has a talent for shooting captivatingly beautiful images in places where political and social upheaval shook global politics and his images have been used in the world’s biggest reportage magazines such as GEO, Paris Match, L’Express, Stern and National Geographic. Maitre’s subtle use of perspective, light, contrast and colour, transform his images into touching contemporary witnesses full of magic and fascination with a deep respect for the African people.

The publisher comments on the book: ‘this book is unique in its photographic vision of Africa, in the emotion it evokes and in its mix of themes such as tradition, landscape, environment, conflicts, daily life and night. It is unique as a witness to the last 30 years in Africa and it also documents Africa’s energy.’

Pascal Maitre’s essays are about the people he met in Africa and who accompanied him along the way. Maitre explains: ‘this book is a tribute to Africans. All of them. Because this pluralistic, complex continent, all too often a subject of caricature, harbours exceptional men and women. From Nobel Prize winners to peasants. From nomads to businessmen. My work as a photojournalist has brought me mostly in contact with down-to-earth people, attached to a particular place. Beings connected to the sky and the earth, seekers of water in the heart of the desert, of spirits in the bush. Fighters and poets. Kalakoa, the Touareg, is forever etched in my memory.’
