Back to the Roots by Götz Diergarten, returns home until 15th January at mpk Kaiserslautern in the Pfalz region of Germany

Götz Diergarten was awarded the 2010 Pfalzpreis für Bildende Kunst (Pfalz Award for Fine Arts) for Graphics/Photography/Video/New Media for three of his works taken from the photography series METROpolis. The artist has been working on this photography project since 2006. It is dedicated to the aesthetics of everyday life, inspired by underground stations in European capitals – a study of the subconscious but system-immanent departure from the continuing trend of normalisation.

According to the artist himself, his aim is to document the micro-cultural differences within one and the same cultural sphere. The artist only shows stations below street level and reacts to whatever he might find, he looks for the specific in the banal.

A core aspect of his photography is his strict modus operandi: always in colour, balanced lighting, fully focused, eye-level, capturing reality in unspectacular motifs.

The METROpolis photography project forms a consecutive array of his creative work, which began on the subject of 'Service stores' in 1994. He shows house fronts, shops with typography and then – upon closer inspection – doors and windows, with many examples coming from the Pfalz region of Germany itself. He notably used to run a studio located at the Donnersberg until 2005, the highest mountain in Pfalz. Take a look: www.donnersberg-touristik.de.

Hence, the exhibition, which also incorporates typography and facade-series by Diergarten, marks a welcome return to his roots.

To celebrate the final day of the exhibition on the 15th of January 2012, the artist will take part in a discussion of 'photography and its implications' with newcomer award-winners Sabrina Geckeis and Judith Walz, curators Annette Reich and Heinz Höfchen, as well as Götz Diergarten.

The Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern, founded as a commercial museum in 1874 and constructed from 1875 to 1880 is now dedicated to the conservation and presentation of fine arts and sculpture from the 19th to the 21st century.

Since 1935, the Bezirksverband Pfalf has been awarding the Pfalzpreis für Bildende Kunst in the three categories fine art, sculpture as well as graphics/photography/video/new media. The winning artist has the opportunity to exhibit in the Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern, which will also purchase one of his or her works (on top of the prize money).
