Edition Lammerhuber : [E]MOTION Vienna Ballet BACKSTAGE at Manuel Legris and Company

Ballet director Manuel Legris and the dancers of the Vienna national ballet allowed photographer Lois LAMMERHUBER to follow them around and take pictures during their rehearsal sessions – oscillating between physical creativity and almost spiritual discipline. The results will be published in the book '[E]MOTION Wiener Staatsballet BACKSTAGE'.

Lois learned how much passion and sweat it takes until a choreography is rehearsed to a degree that lives up to the way it has been envisioned, how much strain – sometimes pushing the pain threshold – the bodies have to endure, how much sweat and even more power it costs until a musical composition is turned into an artwork of movement.

The final result is a visual narrative full of natural splendour and elegance, sometimes full of doubt and often full of joy, sparkling with tangent magic and unmasked intimacy, full of sympathetic trust and moments of happiness expressed in dance, an assemblage of wonderful and very personal emotions: a homage to the dancers of the Vienna National Ballet.

The texts in the book were contributed Manuel Legris, the director of the Vienna National Ballet, and the director of the Vienna National Opera Dominique Meyer, who enthuses: ‘There has never been a ballet book like this before’.

MANUEL LEGRIS has been the director of the Viennese National Ballet and artistic supervisor of the Vienna National Opera's ballet school since the 1st of September. The native Parisian was educated at the Parisian Opera and joined the ballet ensemble in 1980.

He was made the danseur etoile by the former ballet director of the Paris Opera, Rudolf Nurejew in 1986. He danced all the great parts both in the classic and modern repertoire and was the star of many world premieres. He visited many of the most popular and successful ballet companies all over the globe and also toured with his own ensemble 'Manuel Legris et ses Etoiles'.

DOMINIQUE MEYER was born in 1955 in Thann in the Elsace. He is a leading French economy scientist, manager and cultural advisor. He was offered the leadership of the Vienna National Opera in 2007 and has been the director since 2010.

LOIS LAMMERHUBER is a photographer and publisher. His long-standing collaboration with GEO magazine had a considerable impact on his photographic style. Three times he was awarded the 'Graphis Photo Award' for the best international documentary series of the year. Lois Lammerhuber has developed over 40 books, many of which also won awards and honours. He has been a member of the NY Art Directors Club since 1994.

The book was chosen as the men's gift at the Vienna Opera Ball 2012 and was handed out to over 3,000 male ballet visitors.

‘We highly recommend the book [E]MOTION. An experience full of power, virtuosity and sensitivity. Eccentric, expressive, aesthetic.” Der Standard, Vienna
