Food Art Factory : ‘Servus Bayern’ – rich visual reportage on Bavarian lifestyle, traditional recipes and appetising food stills

This time the requirements for the shoot of GU’s new ‘Servus Bayern’ publication were somewhat different. In this cookbook appetising food stills were to be accompanied by reportage images of the Bavarian lifestyle, with all its traditions and lovable details.

This meant that photographs were not only being researched but also already being taken in advance of the production start. Bavaria is a pretty busy place throughout the year after all. Traditional Bavarian processions, folk festivals, May tree celebrations and farm shows - at times several photographers were shooting on the same location simultaneously, so as to ensure that none of the celebrations were missed.

The reportage images were provided with a special look in the second stage through photo editing by Christian Kempf.

The food images were shot in April. Cookbook author Monika Schuster personally prepared all recipes. Whether indoor in the studio, or in the great outdoors in the little studio garden, she was always the one lovingly preparing the details for each shot. Her long term assistant Anka Köhler was always by her side.

Stylist Alexandra Holzer gathered all the Bavarian props locally. Partly as loans from private collections, as well as handcrafted items created specially for the shoot, they each reflect an aspect of the Bavarian lifestyle.

It was ideal that the majority of the crew contributed their own Bavarian based roots and experiences to the production. In return the production also gave all of them the opportunity to immerse themselves in Bavarian culture.
