Hatje Cantz : Cindy Sherman & Erik Schmidt in hot with hunting fever

In 72 photo collages Cindy Sherman - A Play of Selves relates the story of a young woman whose various, unharmonious personality factors threaten to soon overwhelm her, but self doubts manage to overcome them in the end. The sixteen different characters that Cindy Sherman presents are her first attempts to apply herself as an acting subject in photographic scenes, a new artistic approach.

The artist went about this by shooting hundreds of photos of herself in costume and dozens of poses. She then cut out individual pictures form the balck and white results and carefully used them as a planned, handwritten script so as to group the pictures into a play consisting of five acts. The work was first presented in 1975, Buffalo, New York, where Sherman also studied at the time.

Erik Schmidt has been infected with a bit of the old hunting fever. After the Berlin residing artist found his way round the upper class hunting clubs he was allowed to saddle up with *Germany's most beautiful hunter*, he chased the wild animals through the woods with the local farmers and danced at hunting balls until the early hours. According to MONOPOL magazine Schmidt is one of *the stars of young German painting ... much valued by huge collectors such as the Rubells of Miami.*
