Hatje Cantz : Welcome to the Garden
Welcome to the Garden ! Who could refuse an invitation into the colourful world of Frank Darius ? The picture book sports an average everyday territory, where things, naturally enrooted, are crossed with those which are culturally uprooted to create an unusual array of creative offspring: A deserted motorcycle in the middle of a tunnel, scattered with snowy mud, creates a feel of being one with the earth rather than being simply dirty.

Furthermore, the publishers offer a collector's edition. A romantic forest scene covered in snow. A scene which is portrayed with a lot of tenderness , yet is still a consciously chosen, elusive idyll, because the motif is none other than the Berlin “Teufelsberg” and it's American wire tapping station. It was from these ruins in the west of Berlin that the United State's secret services eavesdropped the East during the Cold War. Under the debris of 400,000 homes, all of which were bombed during the war, lies – quite symbolically actually – the bare brickwork of the armed forces faculty, a blueprint of Albert Speer that was supposed to be one of the highlights of planned world capital Germania. Speer's building turned out to be indistructable.
