Not for the faint hearted : the 'Pretty Ugly - Visual Rebellion in Design' book published by Gestalten
Whereas art can be, and is often supposed to be, provocative, design is supposed to primarily serve a function.
It has only been in the last few years that design has progressed from being merely accommodating and instead dares to blatantly confront the viewer with a rather alienating sense of aestheticism, if only for a short time.
The Gestalten book amassed artwork by highly unruly ‘designers’ from graphic design, visual communication, furniture design, art and photography and presents it to the reader.
You may find the odd piece ‘ugly’, but you will catch yourself thinking that some of it might be ‘pretty-ugly’ instead.
Well, panta rhei ..... as Heraklit used to say: everything is in flux and nothing stays the same, everything is subject to eternal change. No point arguing about taste then, eh?
