Scheidegger & Spiess present What Duchamp Abandoned for the Waterfall - Inspiration at Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva seems never-ending and unbelievably quiet. So quiet, that Marcel Duchamp almost did not notice it, when stayed at the Hotel Bellevue for a few days in 1946, spellbound in the face of the view of the waterfall Le Forestay. He turned his back on the fascinating panorama, which has now inspired Caroline Bachmann and Stefan Banz to create a book.

Close to Chexbres, a remote place high above Lake Geneva, one has a beautiful view of Switzerland's most breathtaking landscapes, onto the idyll of rocks and vineyard. Dadaist Duchamp had the very waterfall inspire him to his last great masterpiece: “Étant donnés: 1. La chute d’eau, 2. Le gaz d’éclairage“.

He photographed Le Forestay as well and made it to the starting point of this cryptic installation, which stands in the Philadelphia Museum of Art since 1969.

Bachmann and Banz took several years to capture the view, which had to date been sadly neglected, in a series. One hundred pages, motifs of Lake Geneva, the highlands, the Valleys and Savoy Alps form the atmospheric heart of the photo book. In addition to this, an essay describes Duchamp's work related to the Le Forestay waterfall.
