Stern Edition : Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin - the successful merging of art and commerce

The new issue of STERN FOTOGRAFIE devoted its 55th photography edition to Dutch photographer couple Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. The title “Unter vier Augen” (In Private) presents an assortment of the collaborative works of the artists from 1994 until the present day.

The artist couple revolutionised fashion photography with their unique style. They produced fashion series for VOGUE, The New York Times, Harper’s Bazaar and W, conjured up campaigns for Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Versace. In 2006 they took over the design of the Pirelli calendar. They also impressed the public with their portraits of Hollywood stars such as Clint Eastwood, Mickey Rourke, Gwyneth Paltrow and Sophia Loren.

In 1997 they came across French designer and art director duo M/M Paris for the first time – which resulted in a campaign for Yohji Yamamoto, who became an icon in the history of fashion photography. This creative connection generated further pearls of fashion photography, for example a campaign for Balenciaga or the video for Björk's “Hidden Place”.

Vinoodh Matadin, born in 1961 in Amsterdam, studied fashion design and in 1963 met Inez van Lamsweerde, also born in Amsterdam, when he was working on his first fashion collection and booked the photo design student to photograph it. Since that cooperation in 1986, they have shared their ways of life, both privately and professionally. They are celebrated by art critics for their successful mergence of art and commerce.

The first retrospective was published as a hardback edition and is now available in photography shops and book stores, museum shops as well as at airports and railway stations. The edition can be ordered by calling (+49) 1805 / 8618000 or sending an e-mail to stern-service@guj.de.
