Cat Fight : Apartment Wrestling - the spectacular erotic world of Paul Graves
During his youth, Paul Graves already had a fascination for the cult subject of "Apartment Wrestling", as in bikini minxes battling it out on living room shag pile carpets, to what appears to be the bitter end. Biting and hair pulling allowed. Attractiveness and self-confident femininity came before athletics.
Today his collection flaunts over 800 vintage prints from the late Seventies and Eighties. Catfights in corsets, stockings and suspenders, à la Betty Page, each with their own individual, erotic kick. Paul has developed his latest project over the past three years, alongside his commercial photography. He has juxtaposed the wrestling photos with magazine covers. The results depict ties between the fighting actresses and the cover models, between the past and present.
Yet, "Apartment Wrestling" is also a critical collection in relation to what being on the cover of a magazine signifies. Throughout his career, Paul was often told that the only way of selling a magazine was to place a woman on the cover. And now he himself has placed girls just fighting for attention, on his very own covers.
Some of his first pieces can be fought over in BOOKLET magazine, as well as here, at GoSee. An exhibition is in the pipelines, we’ll keep you updated.
