Raised in the suburban streets of Chicago, Michael has spent the last 10+ years working as a photographer in NYC and LA. His work has been seen in The Fader, W, Wired, Details, NY Magazine, The Wire and The NY Times Magazine, to name a few. He’s shot and designed several book covers for best-selling authors and print campaigns for Levi’s, Motorola, Bud Light, Converse, Nike, Original Penguin, Pony, New Balance, and Illy, among others. He photographed The Wilco Book (Picturebox) and the Grammy-winning packaging for Wilco’s “A Ghost is Born,” and most recently designed Becoming Disfarmer for the Neuberger Museum. Michael’s own books include Land Line (J+L Books), Shut Up Truth (J+L Books), The Week of No Computer (TV Books), The Plan (J+ L Books) and Atlanta (Chronicle Books), about the diversity of the city’s hip-hop scene, from up-and-coming rappers to club kids to multi-Platinum artists. In 2014, his solo exhibition “Your Blues” debuted at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, featuring works that “focus on the overlooked and off the beaten path,” paying respects to niche and not-so-widely known musical acts as well as cross-over genres. Awards include one OBIE, many inclusions in the American Photo Annual, and a finalist for ICP’s Infinity Award for young photographer in ’03.
