On 7 July 1932, a wooden board was turned into a small elephant. This marks the beginning of Alfred’s story. Since that time, he has been racing his way through constantly new adventures on four wheels with children of various generations. It was conceived and illustrated by illustrator Kristina HELDMANN c/o ART ACT. Kristina’s children's book ‘Alfred Elephant Since 1932’ has just been nominated for the German-French Youth Literature Award.

To honor this joyful occasion, we present you a few pages from the book once again, plus why it has been chosen by the jury: “On 7 July 1932, a wooden board became a rolling wooden elephant. Randomly but also deliberately to some extent, it is passed on to a younger child again and again… which is how Kristina Heldmann accompanies him in text and images on his journey from one generation of children to another.

Alfred is both a comforter and companion. He helps children learn to walk, rescues a girl who fell through the ice of a pond, and...
