2024-03-28T11:01:33+01:00Slanted Special Issue Georgia/ArmeniaWelcome to a captivating journey through the vibrant landscapes of creativity, culture, and history in Slanted’s Special Issue Georgia/Armenia.
In August 2023, a team, including Lars Harmsen, Markus Lange, and Rene Wawrzkiewicz, embarked on a journey from Tbilisi, Georgia, to Yerevan, Armenia. Along the way, they delved into the studios of numerous designers and artists, unearthing the rich tapestry of talent that defines these two distinct yet interconnected nations. In the heart of the Caucasus, both Tbilisi and Yerevan emerge as beacons of creativity, diversity, and intelligence. Despite sharing a common border, each city resonates with its unique character, offering a kaleidoscope of experiences.
Wojciech Górecki, an analyst at the Centre for Eastern Studies in Warsaw, provides a brilliant introduction to Georgia, highlighting its geographical position in Asia while underscoring its historical ties to Europe. From independent principalities to a united Georgian kingdom, Górecki paints a vivid picture of a nation shaped by a rich history, autonomy in the Orthodox Church, and the influential role of women, exemplified by the remarkable Queen Tamara.
The stories of Tbilisi and Yerevan intertwine with geopolitical significance, shaping the South Caucasus region. Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital, stands as a geopolitical hub, its history marked by Russian influence and the 2008 war over South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Georgia’s aspirations for EU and NATO membership, coupled with ongoing territorial disputes with Russia, define Tbilisi’s resilience and quest for independence, making it a pivotal player in regional politics.
Turning our attention to Armenia, Krzysztof Strachota, Head of the Turkey, Caucasus, and Central Asia Department at the Centre for Eastern Studies, sheds light on the complexities of a country often overlooked on the map. Armenia, nestled between Russia, Iran, and Turkey, faces the ongoing reality of an undeclared war with Azerbaijan, culminating in the mass exodus of 100,000 Armenians in the fall of 2023, and ending with the dissolution of the self-declared Armenian Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Against the backdrop of Mount Ararat, Yerevan, Armenia’s capital, bears witness to the intricate dynamics of the South Caucasus. Armenia’s ongoing struggle for independence and the persistent conflict with Azerbaijan shape the geopolitics of the former Soviet republic.

2024-03-14T12:54:26+01:00voices
Voices is an image journey realized with artificial intelligence.
People of different ethnicities - in different spatial situations - are confronted with themselves, in a moment of loneliness or at least being alone.
Confronted with the voices of memory, of the past, of conscience...
In the first part of the prompted picture journey, I chose women in hotel rooms.
Without any further explanatory context. Each one for themselves, in their moment with their picture alone.
We are not at home in hotels, we are strangers there and hopefully it is pleasant, but sometimes it is not...
Images which are generated using artificial intelligence - at least that's how I perceive it - could also create transcendent moments.
The raw material underlying this type of image creation is, if it's like to say, the past of the world.
So in a way it is a kind of communication with the beyond of our common world
of images and shared memories.
Or at least the part that has been and is fed into the respective generating programs.
From, so to speak, crushed, fragmented and reduced to the format of individual pixels
“Memories” become new simulated connections. Simulated new events, situations and realities.
As with almost no other art form, we are called upon to create a new one together
and to define reality comparison.
Such simulated images of new freedoms and captivity, are confrontating us in their form of art, or at least with this new tool to work with artfully, with questions about conscience and responsibility.
What is fascinating to me is the imperfections in the images generated.
The mirage-like absurdities of the simulated realities, which preserve a piece of “truth” in the bizarre disappointment.
A “truth” that does not allow us to believe the picture, what is shown. A provoke of
mistrust with the traditional desire for correction towards what is right or ideal.
In moments of peace with ourselves, we should listen to the voices that tell us what is or was right and wrong in our world. To listen for the voices that warn and remind us.
But because we are not alone, in a new, changing world we will also listen to the voices that seduce us and give us promises and hopes...
Artificial intelligence is a tool for new independent art forms.
In a certain way, the photographic image has replaced and enriched its artistic predecessors in the past. This is also the case with photography itself.
Going through the transformation of digitalization, the photographic image now begins to become an independent image.
Still emerging from the voices of the past...
